Levosert™ hormonal intra-uterine device (IUD) is a flexible frame which consistently releases small quantities of levonorgestrel in the uterine cavity.
More than 150 million women worldwide use an IUD, more than any other contraceptive method. Most IUDs in use are copper based, which has been available for decades, and generally provide contraception for five to ten years through the release (of different quantities) of copper particles. Copper IUDs are in most countries not considered as pharmaceutical but rather as medical device. Copper IUDs are widely available worldwide and a large number of players are currently active. Hormonal IUDs are complex pharmaceuticals, hence the limited number of products available.
